Mary Ellen Georoff

As a young girl, Mary Ellen Georoff studied piano, voice, clarinet and sang second soprano in church choir, High School Concert Choir and an auditioned women’s ensemble. While earning an AB. in Biology at Mount Holyoke College, she minored in music, sang in Glee Club and studied voice and harpsichord. As a graduate student in Pharmacology at Duke University, she sang with the Chapel Chamber Singers, a 24 member acapella ensemble. While working as a research associate at the University of Arizona, she had an opportunity to sing in the inaugural performance of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana with the Tucson Symphony Chorale.

Since earning an M.D.at the University of Cincinnati, she sang in church choirs while practicing pathology and raising a family in Ohio. In the early 2000s, while practicing pathology in Florida, she performed with the Orlando Chorale and Stetson Choral Union as a first alto. While singing with the Orlando Chorale, she was part of the world premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Somewhere I Have Never Travelled, Gladly Beyond.

Since moving to Asheboro, NC, in 2015, Mary Ellen sang first alto in Bel Canto for four years. During the Covid Pandemic, she sang with the Bel Canto Virtual Community Choir and joined the international Stay At Home Choir. She continues to participate in SAHC, having submitted numerous video recordings. She is eagerly looking forward to her second season with Gate City Voices as a second soprano.

Mary Ellen is currently the Laboratory Medical Director at Randolph Health and a member of Greensboro Pathology Associates, a Sonic Healthcare USA company. She and her husband live in Asheboro with their two Norwegian Buhund show and competitive performance dogs. Her immediate family is also living in the Triad; her son is a zoo vet at NC Zoo, and her daughter is a CRNA at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Her two granddaughters sing, play piano and are active in Canterbury School drama productions in Greensboro, as well as community sports programs.
